Fun and games: Looking for something to do this weekend? The Carnival is coming back to ForeFront Field (home of the Lake Erie Crushers), 2009 Baseball Blvd., June 10-14. Activities include carnival rides, games, special shows, and concessions.
Day passes are $25 for weekdays and $30 for weekends. Parking is free, and $5 general admission tickets are online, as well as a list of hours and other details regarding the event.
Play ball: The Avon Ohio Little League 2026 Fall Ball online registration is now open. Save $10 and register by June 15.
Closing details: Details, 36840 Detroit Road, owner Lori Miles reached out to me last week that she had made the bittersweet decision to close the gift shop after 23 years in business.
“After much thought and consideration, I will be retiring and Details will be closing its doors by Aug. 31,” she said.
I know this decision was not an easy one for her. She has poured so much into this community and her longevity owning a small business in a rapidly growing retail arena is a testament to her love of Avon.
For those ‘new’ to Avon, Details is located in the historic Lewis House (built around 1843) which is made from sandstone from the Amherst quarries and reputed to be the only pyramid- roofed stone house in Ohio.
The Lewis house was moved from Center Road (near Walmart) in August 2002, to its current location in Olde Avon Village.
Movie night: The free movie night of the summer from the Parks and Recreation Department is June 12 at the Every Child’s Playground across from the Avon Aquatic Facility on Detroit Road and features “Shrek.” The movie begins at dusk.
The next movie night is July 10 and features “Zootopia 2.”

Additional concerts include from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 22 with country music from the Whiskey Outlaws Band, and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 12 with classic rock from the Stringer Brothers Band.
Democrats fundraiser: Join the Avon Democratic Club (ADC) for its annual baseball fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at ForeFront Field (formerly Crushers Stadium) 2009 Baseball Blvd. where the Lake Erie Crushers will compete against the Mississippi Mud Monsters.
Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased through the Avon Democratic Club’s baseball link.
250 Jubilee events: Registration is now open online for the Lake Erie Liberty 5K Run/Walk taking place at 10 a.m. June 27 at Beach Park Station, 33489 Lake Road. Participants will receive a race shirt, finisher medal, and post-race refreshments.

Farmers market: A new farmers market, Farm Dog Fresh, will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday this summer through October at Stop 65, 33479 Lake Road. Farm Dog Fresh’s mission is to support local farmers while providing the community with fresh, locally-sourced produce. Since 2020, the market has served the Kamm’s Corners neighborhood in Cleveland.
Game over: It appears Game On Avon Lake Bar & Grill has closed its location in the Drug Mart Plaza, 33382 Walker Road. There are other locations in Lakewood, North Olmsted and Parma.

Summer market: The Avon Lake Market is back this season and the first event will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. June 18 at Veterans Memorial Park, 32756 Lake Road. The event is an opportunity to shop local vendors and businesses, as well as purchase food.
Anglers unite: The city’s Fishing with Friends program returns from Wednesdays to Saturdays June 10 to July 25 for kids ages 15 and under. The free event is from 8 to 11 a.m. at Walker Road Park, 31621 Walker Road. Bait and poles are provided.
New this year, Fishing with Family is an evening option for the many parents and guardians who work during the day and aren't able to join the morning sessions. Families can gather at the park from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Award winners: The Avon Lake Community Council recently announced the 2025 Avon Lake Citizen of the Year recipients, the Sheard Family, and the 2025 Project of the Year winner, Fall Fest, a Kiwanis-sponsored event.
For the past 10 years, the Sheard Family has provided an open hockey rink in their front yard for families to use in memory of their son Michael. The Sheards also build, maintain, and provide hockey equipment for all who need it.
The Kiwanis-sponsored Fall Fest brought over 1,000 people for food, games, and the opportunity to raise scholarship funds for qualified Avon Lake graduating seniors.
The Citizen of the Year award, Project of the Year award, and the Council’s first scholarship recipient will receive their awards at 6:30 p.m. June 25 at the Avon Lake Public Library, 32649 Electric Blvd.

Building renovations: The old Malley's Chocolates building, 590 Dover Center Road, is getting a makeover and is soon to be an extension of the Hawthorn Grove Childcare.
Streetscape design: City Council is currently discussing plans authorizing the mayor to apply for and administer funds from the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission Community Planning Services Program for the Detroit Road Corridor Strategic Plan and Streetscape Design Standards Project.
City officials are looking for assistance developing streetscaping standards for Detroit Road from Lakeview Drive to Wooster Road. This is an important commercial corridor, but they do not have a cohesive plan for new development to make it a welcoming destination. A plan would provide guidelines for future improvements. The application shows their plan along with photographs which show the commercial investments on the Detroit Road corridor where there are some new businesses and remodeling of existing business, but there is not a cohesive feel to the area. This would help them get a plan in place for that moving forward.
All aboard!: Hop on board for a free tram ride (weather permitting) at Sandy Ridge Reservation from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays now through September. Trams depart from the visitor center, 6195 Otten Road.
Master planning: City officials recently launched an update to the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Working with planning consultant McKenna, the city will build on its 2013 Master Plan by identifying new priorities and practical strategies with resident input, as well as a thorough analysis of how the community has grown and changed.
Residents can get involved now online by dropping a pin on an interactive map, completing a short survey or leaving a comment. The site will serve as a running hub for project updates, draft materials and public input summaries throughout the process.
The McKenna team will also be out in the community at several local events including:
June 13 - Touch-a-Truck, Shady Drive Complex
June 21 - Summer Concert, South Central Park
Aug. 8 - Corn Festival, South Central Park
Oct. 10 - Fall Fest, South Central Park
Nov. 7 - Stache Dash, South Central Park
Big trucks: Children and families can get up close and personal with several big trucks as the annual Touch-A-Truck event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13 at the Shady Drive Complex, 37077 Shady Drive.
The free event encourages children and adults to touch vehicles, ask questions and climb inside to take in the view from the driver's seat.
To ensure a welcoming experience for everyone, the first two hours (from 10 a.m. to noon), will be sensory-friendly, with no lights, sirens or horns.
Safe choices: The Police Department, Kiwanis Club and Culver’s are teaming up to encourage kids to make safe choices while riding their bikes this summer.
Police officers are issuing a BOLO (be on the lookout) for kids “caught being safe” by wearing their bike helmets. When officers see a child making a smart safety choice, that child may receive an envelope with a coupon for a free scoop of Culver’s frozen custard.
Kudos to the owners of Culver’s for donating 150 coupons. They also donated free tickets and parking passes to several Lake Erie Crushers games.
Heart honors: The Fire Department has earned Silver recognition from the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS program, a national initiative that recognizes emergency medical service agencies for high-quality care for patients experiencing heart attacks and strokes.
Street repairs: The city’s annual street repair and paving program is underway. Residential street paving has started on Chaucer and Westfield drives. Schedules may change depending on weather and/or equipment availability.
A complete list of streets scheduled to be paved is on the city’s website.
Upcoming library events: An American Red Cross Blood Drive will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 12 in the library’s auditorium, 1600 Hampton Road. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or register online and enter the code “RockyRiverLibrary.”
A Summer Lawn Concert will take place at the library from 5 to 7 p.m. June 17. Bring a picnic blanket or a chair to sit outside. A food truck will be onsite.
Flag Day: Residents are encouraged to fly our nation’s flag as a symbol of our freedom June 14. Free Honor Flags to display on Flag Day are available at City Hall, the Senior Center, and the Recreation Department.
The flags are called Honor Flags as they were previously placed on the graves of veterans in recognition of their service to our country.

Making connections: Westlake High School is seeking local employers to partner with its Business Connection Internship Program by hosting senior interns. It’s an opportunity to support student growth, connect with emerging talent, and strengthen your reputation as a community-minded business.
The interns are seniors in good standing who are eager to gain hands-on experience and build real-world workplace skills. From October through April, students explore career paths while contributing meaningful work to the businesses.
If you’re interested in making a lasting impact and investing in the next generation, contact Bob Patton, internship coordinator, at pattonb@wlake.org for more information.
Patriotic homes: To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary residents can participate in the city’s “Most Patriotic House Decorating Contest.”
To enter, decorate the exterior of your home with patriotic décor and submit photos through the city’s online entry form by Aug. 31.
Mayor Dennis Clough will review all eligible entries and select the top three “Most Patriotic” homes. Winning homes will be featured on the city’s website and Facebook page, and each will receive a $100 gift card to one of three local restaurants: Stella Mia, AJ’s Urban Grill, or Stonehouse Grill.
