Owl Freed from Soccer Net 📍 Avon

The call came in from the soccer field, and for once it had nothing to do with an unruly parent disputing a call with a referee.

Officers Steve Vogel and David Orlando arrived to find a Great Horned Owl hopelessly tangled in the netting, talons hooked deep in the nylon and a pair of enormous yellow eyes locked on the officers. So they did what you do when a confused apex predator needs a hand. They got to work, slowly and carefully, until every last talon came free.

Careful is the right word here. A Great Horned Owl's grip is one of the most brutally efficient tools in the animal kingdom, strong enough to crush the spine of prey heavier than the owl itself. These birds routinely take on skunks, geese, and even other raptors, and they do it with feet built like bear traps. Vogel and Orlando handled all of that with the patience and sweat of a main character from an ‘80s action movie.

The owl was freed and sent on its way, presumably to go puncture every soccer ball on the Westside.
