Movie night rescheduled: The final summer movie night, featuring “Monsters, Inc,” will take place at dusk Aug. 14 at the Every Child’s Playground, 36265 Detroit Road. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.
Beginner comics workshop: Learn about the foundations of sequential art and the basic techniques to plan, draw and write your own comics (all materials provided) during a presentation from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at the library, 37485 Harvest Drive.

Repaving project: City Council is currently discussing the approval of an ordinance whereby the City of Avon and the City of North Ridgeville have determined that the City of Avon shall act as the Lead Agent for the project relative to the preparations for and construction of a Mills Road Asphalt Resurfacing Project.
Pending approval, Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen will be authorized and directed to execute a Cooperative Agreement with the City of North Ridgeville for preparation of engineering plans and specifications, public bidding, construction and construction administration related to the performance of the Mills Road Asphalt Resurfacing Project, along the entirety of Mills Road across both communities.
According to the ordinance, Avon city officials find that it is in the best interest of the health, safety and welfare of both communities that the City of Avon goes forward with advertising for public bids for the Mills Road Resurfacing Project to substantially complete the project during the 2026 construction season.
Real Housewife: Avon Lake native Carmella DeCesare (also known as Carmella Garcia) joined the cast of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” for Season 20 currently airing on Bravo (Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT). The former Playboy Playmate and WWE Diva Search contestant has local ties as a Northeast Ohio native and through her marriage to former Cleveland Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia. The couple is now divorced.

Talented library employees: The Avon Lake Public Library staff has hidden artistic talents beyond working at the library. The community is invited to come out to the library, 32649 Electric Blvd., for an evening of art and creativity at 6 p.m. Aug. 13.
Coffee shop update: Many often take to social media asking when the new Biggby Coffee shop will open in the former Rio Coffee Brewery space, 33388 Walker Road. Rio closed in December 2024 and a few months later it was announced Biggby would occupy the space. Renovations have taken way longer than expected.
Franchise owners recently posted on Facebook that they are getting closer to opening the new location. The refrigerators are in place and coffee equipment is arriving. The ice machine has been installed, and menu boards are coming together.

Another business preparing to open is Blume Nail Bar in the storefront that once occupied the original Kelsey Elizabeth Cakes, 720 Avon Belden Road. Follow the nail salon on Facebook for updates.
Going to the dogs: We may be in the ‘dog days of summer,’ but summer is slowly coming to an end. The 20th anniversary Big Splash will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center, 32850 Electric Blvd. All communities are welcome to attend.
The event brings the community of dog lovers together for an epic swim party. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department opens the gates to the pool to help support Love-A-Stray after the regular pool season ends.
Online registration is now open and the first 300 to register receives a free 20th Anniversary Big Splash T-shirt and tennis ball for their dog.
The Friends of the Lorain County Dog Kennel will manage the concession stand, offering hot dogs, pizza, and pop. All proceeds from the concession stand will be donated to the Friends of the Lorain County Dog Kennel. Avon Lake Animal Clinic will provide dog first aid, and Hollywood Feed - Avon, EarthWise Pet - Avon Lake, The Grateful Dog Bakery, and Camp Bow Wow Westlake will attend as vendors. Scoop 440 will also assist with cleanup duties.
Happy anniversary: Congratulations to Maynard and Betty Bauer who recently celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary. Maynard Bauer was the Bay Village City Schools superintendent from 1974 to 1989.
Food Truck Fridays: There are only a few more Food Truck Fridays left from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Village Green, behind City Hall, 350 Dover Center Road. Upcoming dates include Aug. 14 featuring Barrio and Donut NV; Aug. 21 featuring bRaised in the CLE and Feelin Good Ice Cream; and the final date of Aug. 28 with Parilya and Sip Boba Tea & Acai, and music from Taylor Lamborn.
Victory Park Ohio events: The inaugural Afterburn Music Festival takes place Aug. 14-15 at Victory Park Ohio, 7777 Victory Lane. The two-day outdoor rock festival features two stages with continuous music beginning at 12:30 p.m. Headliners include Third Eye Blind and Skillet.
Later this month, Northeast Ohio Vet Fest returns to Victory Park Ohio Aug. 28-29. The two-day festival features live music, food, and veteran resources to raise awareness and funds for veteran mental health and suicide prevention.
Pollinator program: The North Ridgeville Residents Pollinator Initiative is holding its first event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the library, 35700 Bainbridge Road. If you're interested in helping local pollinators and helping beautify the city, come to the program based on reading the book, “Nature’s Best Hope,” by Douglas Tallamy.
If you do have time for a quick, easy read, the library has 30 copies of the book in the system. You can reserve it and they will notify you when it’s available for pickup. You can also order it on Amazon. The author, Doug Tallamy, is also featured in many videos discussing the same topic on YouTube.
Excel basics: An introduction to spreadsheets, including entering and formatting data and creating simple formulas, will be presented during the Microsoft Excel Basics program from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at the library, 35700 Bainbridge Rd.

Conversation update: This month’s (Aug. 3) Coffee & Conversation with Mayor Kevin Corcoran was another wealth of information. Special guest, Julie Limpach of the Nathan Perry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, shared information about several of the chapter’s patriotic projects. Upcoming initiatives include Wreaths Across America Dec. 19 in North Ridgeville and the American Revolution Experience exhibit, which will be displayed at the North Ridgeville Branch Library from Sept. 15–24.
The current road paving list is available on the city’s website. Crews are expected to begin milling Case Road Wednesday with paving to follow. Construction updates also can be found online.
The proposed Panda Express, 32429 Cook Road, remains in the city’s plan review process.
The mayor’s next Coffee & Conversation is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Sept. 18 in Council Chambers at City Hall, 7307 Avon Belden Road.
Heart & Sole program: Produce pickup returns this month. Residents can reserve a 12-lb. bag of produce online for $12 and select a pickup location at either the North Ridgeville Branch Library, 35700 Bainbridge Road, on Tuesdays; or Sandy Ridge Reservation, 6195 Otten Road, on Saturdays.
Back-to-school: Join the North Ridgeville City Schools’ Back-to-School Kickoff from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at Liberty Elementary School, 5700 Jaycox Road. There will be a shuttle available from 4 to 7 p.m. between the North Ridgeville Academic Center parking lot, 34620 Bainbridge Road, and Liberty Elementary School to alleviate parking issues.
Master Plan: The Ridgeville Ready Master Plan set the direction for how North Ridgeville should manage growth. Now the city has drafted the rules to carry it out: A new Unified Development Ordinance that brings zoning and subdivision regulations together into one modern document, paired with an updated Zoning Map.
The drafts are posted online, and comments are collected through the project feedback form. The regulations cover how land can be used, what kinds of homes and businesses belong where and details like lot sizes, setbacks, landscaping, signage, building design, parking and access. Whether you own a home, run a business or just care how the city develops, your feedback matters.

Diabetes Wellness Retreat: The Senior Center will host a free, all-day Diabetes Wellness Retreat sponsored by University Hospitals, Sept. 18. The retreat is intended for individuals ages 50 to 80 with pre-diabetes or type 1 diabetes. The workshop will provide education and guidance on: Diabetes and nutrition; healthy meals and snacks; physical activity and exercise; and free wellness tools and resources. Details are still being finalized.
This will be the first time the workshop is offered in Lorain County.
Meet & Greet: The Rocky River City Schools invites Rocky River High School and Rocky River Middle School students and families to an Ice Cream Social and Meet & Greet with new Rocky River High School Principal Carrie Knapp and new Rocky River Middle School Assistant Principal Austin Handrych Aug. 11.
The event will take place outside the Rocky River High School stadium, 20951 Detroit Road, immediately following the annual Booster Bash, which begins at 6:30 p.m.
New restaurant: Playa Bowls recently opened at River Square, 19575 Detroit Road, in the former Tide Cleaner space near Whole Foods. The quick-service fast casual restaurant specializes in bowls, smoothies, juices, and matchas.
Upcoming library events: A fascinating look at the competitive world of champion show chicken breeders is featured in the film documentary, “Chicken People,” that will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Rocky River Library, 1600 Hampton Road. The film also follows the struggles and triumphs of both humans and their chickens on the road to compete at the Ohio National Poultry Show, considered the Westminster of Chickens.

Computer disposal: Got old electronics taking up space? Westlake's Computer Round-Up is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 10-14; and from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Aug. 15 at the Westlake Service Center, 741 Bassett Road.
Accepted items include computers, tablets, monitors, printers, phones, gaming systems, peripherals and more. This service is for Westlake residents only. No materials from businesses, churches or schools will be accepted.
Master officers: Congratulations to Westlake Police Department School Resource Officers (SRO) Pat Foye, Ted Morley and Tim Gaertner for earning the highest professional accreditation awarded by the Ohio School Resource Officers Association, Master SRO. They all met the rigorous criteria needed to earn the level while providing a high degree of service to the Westlake City Schools.
