Short Takes, July 7: The Rodeo comes to Avon, The Crushers unveil new identity honoring hispanic heritage, and updates on orange barrel season

Avon

Cultural celebration: The Lake Erie Crushers recently announced the introduction of their COPA de la Diversión identity, Loros de la Costa Erie, developed in partnership with the Lorain County Hispanic Fund.

Loros de la Costa Erie

Loros de la Costa Erie made its on-field debut at ForeFront Field July 5 and will return for a second celebration Aug. 7. The identity change features a new logo and color scheme that will be integrated into uniforms, hats, in-game activations, and other media.

The name “Loros de la Costa Erie” was created to reflect both cultural pride and regional unity. “Loros,” Spanish for “parrots”, represents communication, vibrancy, and connection. “Costa”, meaning “coast” or “shore”, was intentionally chosen as a symbol of unity, honoring the journey of many families whose ancestors came to this country through coastal communities, while also broadening the identity beyond one city and connecting Hispanic communities throughout Lorain County and along Lake Erie, according to a press release.

The colors of the identity were also selected with intentional meaning and a direct connection to the makeup of Lorain County’s Hispanic community. The light blue represents Lake Erie while also paying homage to the historic Puerto Rican flag, recognizing Puerto Rican heritage as the dominant Hispanic ethnicity represented in Lorain County. The yellow, orange, pink, and purple were chosen to reflect Mexican heritage, drawing inspiration from Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, while recognizing the Mexican community as the second-largest Hispanic population in Lorain County. Together, the colors celebrate the vibrancy, tradition, and diversity of the local Hispanic community.

Tickets purchased for Aug. 7 will help raise funds for the Lorain County Hispanic Fund.

Stations feature educational signage about risks, prevention, and proper removal techniques. Each station also includes a QR code and website link to Lorain County Public Health’s new Tick Tracker digital reporting form. In addition, stations will contain a designated collection jar filled with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol for safe tick disposal. Rocky River

Orange barrel season: At every turn, it seems like there is construction going on around town. Work continues on the Lake Road – Clifton Boulevard Corridor Improvements Project as progress from Linda Street to the bridge over the Rocky River.  Current work includes full-depth repairs, curb removal and replacement, waterline relocation, sewer relocation, and underdrain installation.

Traffic on Lake Road/Clifton Boulevard is reduced to one lane in each direction between Linda Street in Rocky River and Webb Road in Lakewood.  The Marion Ramp from Detroit Avenue to Lake Road/Clifton Boulevard is closed.  Sidewalk, crosswalk, and bike lane closures are also in place; pedestrians and cyclists should follow posted detours.

Work on the Center Ridge Gateway Improvement Project continues. Milling of the existing asphalt roadway has been completed throughout the project limits, and the intermediate course of asphalt has been installed across the project site.  Significant sidewalk, curb ramp, curb, and full-depth concrete work have also been completed.

Traffic has been shifted from the middle lanes to the outer lanes and will continue to be maintained with one lane in each direction. This remains a heavily traveled corridor, and motorists should expect delays. Please plan accordingly and allow extra travel time through the area.

Sawcutting is underway in preparation for upcoming casting adjustments throughout the project corridor, as well as work associated with the proposed decorative medians near Giant Eagle and Goldwood Primary School. This phase of work is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.

The Wooster/Shoreland Park project is nearing completion as all plantings have been installed, and remaining work includes final installation of the decorative fountain and placement of park furnishings, including benches and related amenities, which are expected to arrive in early August. The project will transform the vacant property along Shoreland Avenue at Wooster Road into a passive neighborhood park for area residents.

City officials are currently gathering resident feedback for the Hilliard Boulevard/Westway Drive/Gasser project. The survey will remain open online through July 31. Survey results will be used, together with engineering analysis and public comments, to help determine the preferred design for the intersection.
